A Korean American deep-sea fisherman reeled in a record catch 12 miles off the coast of Dana Point last weekend. Eric Kim of Fullerton became the first in California waters to catch a wahoo, the Balboa Angling Club announced on Facebook earlier this week.

“A Wahoo was caught by angler Eric Kim off the 267 while aboard ‘Joker’ this past weekend. This is a once in a lifetime experience for the entire crew as Wahoo isn’t found in our local waters. It weighed 50.1 lbs. and was 60″ long. Great job Eric and the crew of Joker!” the club said.

Scientists believe it might be the first wahoo ever caught off the United States’ Pacific Coast, and Kim thought it happened because of the unusually warm weather.
