Last event: Patrick Reed won the Tournament of Champions on Monday at Kapalua, beating Walker with an 18-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole. Four shots behind with four holes left, Reed holed an 80-yard shot for eagle and made two birdies. He has four victories in his last 35 PGA Tour starts.

Notes: Russell Henley won the 2013 event in his debut as a PGA Tour rookie, breaking the tournament record at 24-under 256. He tied for third at Kapalua. … Jason Day also is coming off a third-place tie at Kapalua. He matched the Plantation Course record with a final-round 62. … Champions Tour players Kenny Perry, Paul Goydos and Fred Funk are in the field. The 50-and-over tour opens next week at Hualalai. … The Humana Challenge is next week in La Quinta, California. Tiger Woods will make his first start of the year the following week in the Phoenix Open.

Last year: Spain’s Pablo Larrazabal beat Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson by a stroke. Mickelson was penalized a stroke in the final round after he double hit a shot from brush on the 13th hole. McIlroy was penalized two strokes after the third round for failing to take full relief from a crosswalk.

Last week: England’s Andy Sullivan won the South African Open for his first European Tour title, beating South Africa’s Charl Schwartzel with a 12-foot birdie putt on the first hole of a playoff. Sullivan began the final round seven strokes behind Schwartzel.

Notes: The top-ranked McIlroy is making his first start of the year. … Martin Kaymer, the winner in 2008, 2010 and 2011, also is in the field along with Schwartzel, Justin Rose, Henrik Stenson, Rickie Fowler, Ernie Els, Victor Dubuisson, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Darren Clarke and Y.E. Yang. … The Qatar Masters is next week, followed by the Dubai Desert Classic.
