A new year has begun. This is called the year of the blue horse, or gap-o in Korean, as per the 60-year combinations. To be more precise, the energy of gap-o will commence on Lunar New Year’s Day, Jan. 31, and the saju fortune will begin after ipchun - the onset of spring, which falls on Feb. 4 this year.

However, most people embrace the New Year’s energy starting on Jan. 1 and want to know what the new year will be like. This is when a lot of people go see fortune tellers.

To a saju practitioner, it’s a very meaningful time, since there indeed are chemical activities among the heavenly stems and earthly branches with the changes of seasons and years. Saju reading around New Year’s Day can indeed provide you with genuine and valuable information. If you get a correct reading about how the year will unfold, it can be very helpful.

Unfortunately, that is not always the case, as some of the the fortune tellers out there are not always honest or qualified.

In a way, it is your responsibility also, as individual views about the universe and life can affect readings.

The most important thing is how you acknowledge saju - not just as a way of fortune-telling, but a channel to know yourself and the truth of your inner self.

Many people are afraid to hear negative readings and may try to induce ‘yes’ answers. Some fortune tellers end up trying to please their clients with their positive readings, or worse, threaten them with horrible omens. In the latter instance, they may be blind with avarice and may ask you pay more to change your fate.

It is important to understand that every life has peaks and valleys, joys and sorrows. For those who want to know the truth, saju can give invaluable advice in order to prepare people to face their positive or negative destiny. For an example, once you know when to stop, when to go ahead, or when to slow down, the hardship can become rather bearable.

Then how can you make this opportunity as productive as possible?

When you meet a fortune teller, you are asked to provide your birth year, month, day and hour. It doesn’t take long to plot the saju, especially with the help of Internet applications nowadays. It is automatically calculated taking all the circumstances into consideration ― age, gender and place of birth; whether you are from the East or the West. Even the solar or lunar dates with leap months and summer times are reflected.

Once saju is plotted, fortune tellers use their expertise to describe your personality, and put your past, present and future into context. Sometimes, you may get some hints about your previous life and ancestors. Saju can also reveal your childhood, married life and later fortune, including your rapport with your parents, siblings, friends, spouse and children.

It is like an introduction before the prevailing fortune in a specific year is told. But it is such a significant part that you should memorize it, as it doesn’t change throughout your life. You will hear your symbolic element, colors and objects. You may ask the fortune teller what are your lucky signs and what are not.

Each year has dissimilar influences. For some, it may be acquiring wealth. For others, it’s the year of building careers. If you have specific things being planned or other wishes, you can ask whether they are affirmative. Be prepared with questions which can be categorized into human relations, academic degrees or licenses, love, wealth, career and reputation.

Last but not least, whatever you are told, you should remember that the fortune tellers cannot cure all of your pains and there are many other factors that influence your fate, such as effort and the external environment. Fortune telling is just a reference, not an instruction. You must be the leader and owner of your life.
