Fifty years have passed since the world was introduced to Tiger Yang, a grand master and creator of the martial art moo yea do.

Yang, 70, made his film debut while he was a student at Pusan National University in the 1970s with a role in “Assassin 063.”

Roles followed in Hong Kong and in Hollywood, where he was cast in Director Ted Mikel’s “The Devil’s Gambit” in 1981.

As one of a handful of people in the world who hold ninth-degree black belts in taekwondo, as the head of the International Moo Yea Do Federation and as the instructor of a Fullerton, California, martial arts center, Yang’s not done yet.

“When I look back on my life, from my beginnings in Korean movies to Hong Kong and then to Hollywood, through 50 years, I feel like I’ve lived a film,” he said. “It was a life of continuous challenges.”

Moo yea do, born in the 1980s, is Yang’s combination of tae kwon do, kung fu and hap ki do.

“Although I left the world of tae kwon do to become a martial arts film actor, I never once forgot my roots. After creating moo yea do in 1980, I’ve taught thousands of students and made my own world,” Yang said. “I’m 70 years old, but I’ve never for one day not practiced martial arts. I’m still a practicing martial artist.”
