Manhattan’s Korean karaoke businesses face copyright lawsuit

May 15, 2015

Ten Manhattan Korean karaoke businesses are facing a copyright infringement lawsuit.

According to the District Court of the Southern District of New York, Phoenix Entertainment (PEP), which creates music files for karaoke machines, has filed a suit against six karaoke owners.

Under fire are five Koreans, identified as Lee, Choi, Lim, Ahn and Han, and one Japanese American, identified as K.

PEP distributes about 100,000 karaoke machine songs and accompanying videos to karaoke businesses through CDs. It said the businesses in question downloaded its content illegally online.

It accused one particular business, identified as S, of selling karaoke machines, guaranteeing 100 new songs each month on top of 100,000 songs in 15 languages, without certified PEP disks.

PEP said in its suit that each business has cost it at least $25,000.
