Magnitude-6.0 quake detected off N. Korea’s east coast: report

WASHINGTON, July 12 (Yonhap) — A magnitude-6.0 earthquake was detected off North Korea’s east coast Thursday (local time), Reuters quoted the U.S. Geological Survey as saying.

The tremor occurred some 200 kilometers southeast of the North Korean city of Chongjin at a depth of 560 kilometers below the seabed, it said.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center reported the earthquake to be of magnitude 5.8.

It occurred at 4:18 a.m. North Korean time, 538 kilometers below the seabed and 194 kilometers southeast of Rajin, northeastern North Korea, the center said on its website.
