Korean indie bands to rock Liverpool festival

SEOUL, May 18 (Yonhap) — South Korea will host a showcase of Korean indie rock bands during a large-scale international music festival in Britain next week, to help their advance to the European market, organizers said Monday.

Five teams will perform in the showcase, “Korean Stage in Liverpool,” on Sunday, the last day of the three-day Liverpool Sound City festival, said the Korea Creative Content Agency (KCCA) and the Korean Cultural Center in Britain.

South Korea has annually held the K-rock event since 2013 to help introduce Korean indie bands to European audiences. A total of 11 bands have since participated in the event. This year’s headliners are Jambinai, Dead Buttons, Thirdstones, PATiENTS and Monoban, according to the organizers.

After performing in last year’s showcase, the indie rock duo Dead Buttons signed a contract with a British record label to release a debut album in the country, they said.

Three of the five teams — the Dead Buttons, Thirdstones and PATiENTS — are set to give a pre-showcase concert at the Korean Cultural Center in London on Tuesday evening.

“The public attention on Korean indie rock bands is very high in Britain, the home of rock music,” said Park Young-il, chief of the KCCA’s European office. “We’ll make efforts to make the ‘Korean Stage’ a stable platform for local indie musicians wanting to advance into Europe.”
