Japanese musicians to put on comfort women apology concert in DC

Three Japanese musicians are taking it upon themselves to offer an apology toward former comfort women by putting on a concert in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 5.

An event titled “Prayer Concert” held inside Segeroh Presbyterian Church will see International Chamber Orchestra of Washington Conductor Masatoshi Mitsumoto, University of Miami piano assistant professor Naoko Takao and Shenandoah Conservatory violin associate professor Akemi Takayama perform.

The concert is a result of a longtime friendship between Mitsumoto and Korean Concert Society Elder Bang Eun-ho.

Mitsumoto suggested a concert to seek forgiveness and reconciliation for the human rights violations by Japanese soldiers during World War II on young women from countries like Korea, China and the Philippines.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has been facing increasing calls for a formal apology from both the Korean and international community.
