The International Olympic Committee (IOC) deleted a post on its Olympic Athletes’ Hub that contained what many considered “derogatory” characterizations of South Korea ― the host of the 2018 Pyeongchang Games.

On Monday, the IOC uploaded a slideshow titled “11 Things You May Not Know about S. Korea” on its hub.

The authors introduced Korea as a “tech king,” but followed with claims that plastic surgery is “heir to the throne,” with one in five Korean women having undergone plastic surgery, more than any other nation.

The article also stated that South Koreans are workaholics.

After causing somewhat of a public outcry, South Korean organizing officials felt the need to proactively handle the situation.

“During a conference call on Tuesday afternoon, we informed the IOC that some pieces of information included in the slideshow were inaccurate,” said a Pyeongchang Olympic Games Organizing Committee (POGOC) official.

“For instance, the line about plastic surgery referred to data from just one statistical research company, which can be misleading.”

The IOC expressed regret over its actions and deleted the post immediately, the official said.

The rest of the list included more appropriate facts about Korea given the context.

The authors mentioned that South Korea is a dominant force in women’s golf.

Another slide described the Korean alphabet (Hangeul) as logical and contained additional cultural facts about the country ― one read, “Korean New Year is celebrated on the first day of the Korean Lunar Calendar.

“Our suggestions were not about the post per se,” the POGOC official said. “It was about the fact that some of the information provided was counterfactual.”
