Dreamcatcher’s new album captures moments of terrifying nightmare

SEOUL, Sept. 20 (Yonhap) — Sticking to its unique fantasy-themed narrative, K-pop girl band Dreamcatcher released Thursday its third extended play, “Alone in the City,” whose main track captures frightening moments of a nightmare.

The main track, “What,” is in continuation of the septet’s choice of heavy metal sounds packed into dance music, a genre unique to Dreamcatcher.

“Our debut (single) was in the metal-rock genre. And we have since stuck to it in every release. The tune really fits Dreamcatcher’s color and our powerful choreography,” team leader Jiu said during a media showcase in Seoul.

“Since metal rock is the color unique to Dreamcatcher, we couldn’t give up that genre. It will be a great thing if we cement our presence with it,” member Sua noted.

But, the latest album contains far more than the title track’s metal rock. Five of the album’s six tracks feature symphony rock and hip hop with R&B tunes, she said.

The latest album carries extra importance for the female septet as they make another bid to launch to the forefront of the K-pop scene after their previous EP and single releases failed to register a notable outcome on major music charts.

“It was a great challenge for us in many aspects. We prepared the album as if facing a challenge in terms of music, stage costume and choreography,” member Dami noted.

“We have not made any visible achievement so far. So it was extra difficult for us to finally fix the song, dance and the images to the stage. We made modifications to them at the last minute because we wanted to put out our best,” Jiu said.

The members’ goal for the new album is to have its main track, “What,” rank on local music charts, the girl band said.

“We have not made it to music charts, but if we do, I want to throw a big event with fans to celebrate,” member Siyeon said.

The main track is a speedy dance song profusely laced with metal-rock sounds and peppered with member Dami’s rap.

The song depicts the spell of an entrapping nightmare and desperate efforts to wake the nightmare.

Dami, who participated in the writing of the song’s rap part, said she was inspired by the K-pop female girl band BLACKPINK’s captivating rap in their 2016 hit “Boombayah.”

The album release followed the girl band’s world tour that brought them to South America and across Asia.

Still, they have yet to tour China, the home country of member Handong. “We wish we could visit China,” member Gahyeon noted.

The album has a total of six tracks, including “Wonderland,” “Trap,” and “July 7th.”
