‘Captain America: Civil War’ draws large audience on Children’s Day

SEOUL, (Yonhap) — The Hollywood superhero film “Captain America: Civil War” attracted more than 800,000 moviegoers to local theaters on Children’s Day, data showed Friday.

The film represented 65.8 percent of tickets sold across the country on Thursday, adding 885,293 viewers to its domestic total of 5.75 million, according to the computerized box office tally from the Korean Film Council.

It took only nine days for the film to reach the total, which is faster than the 2015 hit “Avengers: Age of Ultron” that amassed 5.43 million viewers in nine days of run.

The superhero adventure flick from Walt Disney Co. has raked in US$261 million worldwide. It is set to open in the United States on Friday (local time).

The third installment in the Captain America series depicts the confrontation among the Avengers members over the Superhero Registration Act. The heroes fight with each other, divided into two teams each led by Iron Man and Captain America.

This year, Children’s Day was the start of a four-day holiday that lasts till Sunday, as the government designated Friday as a temporary national holiday to help boost domestic consumption.
