Burberry sales up, Fendi down in S. Korea

British fashion house Burberry’s sales have surged while Italian brand Fendi’s have dipped.

According to the Financial Supervisory Service, Burberry Korea’s sales in the 12 months from March last year were up 5.3 percent — from 239.2 billion won (about $210 million) to 252.1 billion (about $220 million)

Prada Korea and Christian Dior Couture Korea also had increases.

The Italian fashion house’s sales increased 1.2 percent between February last year and January this year. The French brand’s sales soared 19.2 percent.

But Fendi Korea‘s result was down 13.9 percent in the period, while French designer Yves Saint Laurent had a 200 million ($180,000) operating loss.

In economically tight times, luxury goods makers are using aggressive marketing to attract consumers.

Dior, for instance, is holding the exhibition “Esprit Dior,” in collaboration with Korean artists including Suh Do-ho, Kim Dong-yoo and Kim Hye-ryun. The exhibition, at Dongdaemun Design Plaza in Seoul, offers a glimpse into the world of French fashion designer Christian Dior.

Burberry has donated 200 million won to Korean charity Beautiful Foundation to help unprivileged children. The funds are used to run work-experience programs for the unemployed and children of low-income families, according to the company.

Gucci has launched an “affordable” bag range, which is mainly made of canvas and suede, selling for 1 to 2 million won.
