550 foreign English teachers recruited

The National Institute for International Education (NIIED) said it has recruited 550 foreign English teachers who will teach from this semester at primary and secondary schools across the nation.

It said it has adopted a tighter screening for the recruitment.

“We’ve adopted a more thorough evaluation of applicants along with face-to-face interview sessions,”an NIIED official said.

They are currently taking an orientation program in Jeonju, North Jeolla Province, and Daejeon.

The NIIED, established by the Ministry of Education in the 1960s, took over the work of hiring English teachers for the public schools in 2007 known as the English Program in Korea (EPIK).

The NIIED hires foreign English teaches twice a year, with the size of the recruitment depending on demand from the regional education offices.

The institute also gives new teachers trainings on lesson planning and classroom management, along with cultural experiences such as an introduction to Korean language, visiting a hanok village and learning Taekwondo.
